John was engaged by QUT to bring innovation to the redevelopment of the Health Sciences Teaching Laboratories on the Garden Point Campus. John engaged users in a extensive workshopping process that ran in parallel with Scheme Design to both innovate about the laboratory form, borrowing from the principles of the SuperLab, but also pedagogy and laboratory technical staff services. The resultant lab concept provides for a flexible PC2 laboratory for 160 students that could equally support Physics and other sciences.
The key design principle of the laboratory is that all services to the main laboratory are provided from the ceiling, any fixed services moved to the periphery of the lab, which enables a ‘clear floor’ laboratory that is easily reconfigured to support different sciences. Additionally the use of technology is integrated and extends the ideas of the SuperLab to another level making great use of next generation tools.
