John, in his role as Education Planner, introduced the concept of the SuperLab, as borrowed from the original SuperLab at London Metropolitan University, in order to respond to the requirement to be spatially efficient and deliver pedagogical best practice. The X-Lab represents a 30% reduction in total area devoted to teaching laboratory space while still delivering the same number of learning seats to the university.

This project is memorable in that when John first presented the concept of the SuperLab, several of the academics in the workshop were openly dismissive of the idea. Taking them on the journey to realise the concept, which is now operational to great student acclaim is a professional highlight for John.
